YB Yeoh at the site of the restoration of pillbox in Teluk Kumbar
Three old World War pillboxes have been restored to their former glory in Teluk Kumbar,Penang.
The restoration will surely help serve to educate the younger generation on the history and sacrifices of those who fell during the major wars.
The structures are also known as bunkers.
For the uninitiated, pillboxes are a type of blockhouse or concrete guard post often camouflaged and equipped with loopholes through which defenders can fire weapons.
On hand to inspect the finished pillboxes was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin and officials from the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI).
There will also be a poster competition on the adaptive use of the pillboxes organised by GTWHI and Wawasan Open University (WOU).
The aim of the competition is to obtain the most interesting and viable re-use purposes of these newly renovated pillboxes or bunkers.
Those keen to learn about the history of these pillboxes and also about Penang during the war times, should make it a “must” to visit and learn about this era.
