Come 2024, work on the RM1.2 billion expansion of the Penang International Airport (PIA) will commence.
The project will include the new terminal, infrastructure and other facilities for passengers and travellers.
“There will also be a sheltered walkway connecting the main terminal and the newly opened multi-storey car park. For the moment however, we will build a temporary sheltered walkway from the car park.
“We also wish to thank our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for approving the budget for the project, ” said the Member of Parliament for Bayan Baru YB Sim Tze Tzin who was on a working visit to the PIA.
He also attended a briefing session by officials of the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MASB).
He also expressed his sincere appreciation for the Prime Minister for his attention and concern on PIA and its urgent needs.
“The expansion will cater for some 12 million people and travelers while presently we have reached a capacity of 8.3 million passengers mark after international borders were opened.
“We expect that the new capacity will cope till 2050 under the master plan. At that time we may have to cater for 25 million passengers at PIA.
“The expansion work is expected to take three to four years and we will ensure that the new terminal will have features depicting the culture and heritage of the state,” added Sim.
Presently, the PIA ranks third in the country after the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the Kota Kinabalu Airport.
Meanwhile, he also expressed satisfaction that the toilets at the airport have been maintained well. This also includes overcoming the flood woes and traffic congestion at PIA.
Also present was MAHB senior general manager Kamaruzzaman Razali and PIA Senior Airport Manager Mohd Nadzim Hashim among others.
