Jagdeep giving moral support to residents
Penang state executive councillor for local government Yb Jagdeep Singh Deo was first on the ground this morning after a heavy rain caused many parts of the island to be hit with flash floods.
Speaking to Penang Hyperlocal, he said he was concerned over the well-being of those hit by flash floods.
Parts of Georgetown and surrounding areas received half the month’s rainfall in five hours.
The downpour from around 4am to 9am resulted in flash floods in several residential localities.
YB Jagdeep Singh Deo was joined by the Member of Parliament for Jelutong RSN Rayer and Penang Island City Council Mayor Dato A Rajendran.
They visited several homes in Jalan P Ramlee, Kampung Makam and Jalan Datuk Keramat.
Their presence brought some form of relief and moral encouragement for those affected in these areas.
“We have experienced an unusual amount of rainfall this morning. This is a low lying area and despite our short term and mid-term mitigation projects. Among those we have implemented are to raise road levels, widening of drains and also installing pumps.
“The situation is also made more difficult with the high tides.
“We have done and are doing what is possible to overcome the current crisis of climate change. I also call on the unity government to implement our long term flood mitigation projects as soon as possible.
“I have also instructed our mayor to carry out a cleansing project in those areas affected. In the meantime, as humans, we can only be prepared to face such climate change and crisis,” said Jagdeep.
At the same event, Rayer also called on the Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate change to hasten flood mitigation projects for Jalan P. Ramlee.
“I call for the RM150 million worth of projects under the 11th Malaysia Plan to be implemented as soon as possible,” he added.
Meanwhile, Rajendran gave his commitment that the council workers are doing all they can to clean roads and drains on a diligent basis.
