Veteran hotelier Derrick Tan, a distinguished general manager who is now serving in the Philippines, is in Penang to reunite with former colleagues and friends, marking a meaningful homecoming filled with warmth and celebration. 

His visit coincides with his 76th birthday, which was commemorated with a simple yet heartfelt cake-cutting ceremony among close friends from the hospitality fraternity.

His stay at the Hompton Beach Hotel, Tanjung Tokong, is warmly hosted by Steven Suffian, General Manager of Hompton Hotel. 

Also present to celebrate the occasion was Lynne Choong, General Manager of Bayview Hotel Georgetown, Quah Lin Lin, Dosm at Cititel Penang, Miyco Lim along with other familiar faces from the industry.

Tan, who previously served as General Manager of Bayview Hotel Georgetown, is widely regarded as a mentor and guiding force to many hoteliers in Penang and beyond.

 During his tenure in Penang, he played a pivotal role in training, nurturing, and shaping a generation of DOSMs, hotel managers and general managers, many of whom now hold senior leadership positions across the hospitality industry.

“I am happy to see many of my ex-colleagues have moved up the ranks into management positions. I wish them continued success and all the very best,” said Tan, reflecting on the achievements of those he once guided.

He also quipped that age is just a number and urged all of his colleagues to do their part in encouraging their team members 

Even at 76, Tan remains actively involved in the hospitality sector and continues to inspire through leadership and mentorship. He currently serves as the General Manager of St Giles Makati in Manila, the Philippines, where he brings decades of experience, wisdom and passion to his role.

Respected for his dedication, humility and commitment to developing people, Derrick Tan remains a mentor to many hoteliers, leaving a lasting legacy in the industry through the lives and careers he has shaped.
