A tragic road accident on February 18, 2025 in Sungai Bakap left two young siblings severely injured, prompting a wave of public compassion and swift action from the state government.

M. Darshan aged 7 and his sister, M. Kavarjitha aged 5, were on their way to school with their grandmother when their motorcycle collided with a lorry.

Darshan lost use of his left arm, while Kavarjitha lost her right leg. Their grandmother, Madam Amartham Munusamy, sustained head injuries.

In response, the Penang State Government, led by the State Housing and Environment EXCO, launched a coordinated support effort.

A social media campaign raised RM222,024.41 from the public, surpassing expectations and extending beyond its original end date.

Among the initiatives included the  RM42,500 being used to purchase a disabled-friendly low-cost apartment in Bandar Tasek Mutiara, registered under their grandmother as trustee, with future ownership to transfer to the children when they turn 18. The remaining funds are held in trust, with RM1,500 monthly allocated for the children’s welfare until they reach adulthood.

Additionally, the state government allocated a RumahKu Type A unit through the Housing Outcome Performance Committee (HOPE), ensuring safe and accessible housing for the family.

“This tragedy reminds us of the power of community and the importance of inclusive, caring governance. We are committed to ensuring no one is left behind, especially vulnerable children.” said Sundarajoo at the ceremony.

The initiative aligns with the Penang2030 Vision of a family-focused, smart and compassionate state.
