In celebration of the International Mother Earth Day recently, the Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa along with their sister property Golden Sands Resort invited some 50 children from SJKC Pai Chai School to learn the benefits of using biodegradable rice straws over the single-use plastic variety.
The global event is celebrated on April 22, every year since it was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009.
It recognizes that “the Earth and its ecosystems are our home” and that “it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth.”
In line with this, the main purpose of the gathering was to educate the younger and future generation about sustainability and environmentalism.
The kids were accompanied by 27 volunteers from both hotels while the eco- friendly products supplier, Origo Eco.
The fun and educational session offered an opportunity for the children to learn about the planet’s ecosystems and how humanity’s waste is having an adverse impact on climate change.
The group later visited the Herb and Spice Garden located between the resort hotels to try their hand at composting using rice straws.
Many were just simply amazed at how fast these dissolved in soil compared to plastic straws.
The session ended with a trivia quiz on a plastic-free future and refreshments serving Rooted in Nature dishes and drinks.
