
Well-known consumer brand, Ghee Hiang entered into an official Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Exchange Ceremony with Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) earlier today.
The collaboration marks a joint commitment to advance scientific research into the health benefits of Ghee Hiang’s pure sesame oil.
The MoA with UniKL and MoU with USM will facilitate academic-industry cooperation focused on identifying and validating the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties of sesame oil through structured research and scientific evaluation.
Present at the ceremony held at the St Giles Wembley Hotel was State Exco for Youth, Sports and Health, YB Daniel Gooi along with Dato Ch’ng Huck Theng, Executive Director of Ghee Hiang.
Representing the respective universities was Prof Dr Azman Senin, President / CEO of University Kuala Lumpur, Prof Dr Azlan Amran, Deputy VC – Industry and Community Network, USM among others.
Gooi praised the partnership as a meaningful integration of Penang’s heritage with scientific research.
“Ghee Hiang for taking the initiative to scientifically validate the health benefits of its sesame oil, a product trusted by generations, especially mothers during confinement. Penang is committed to supporting this effort, including working with federal authorities to ensure food safety and quality across the board,” said Gooi.
He stressed that the government would not allow inferior or unhealthy products to compromise public well-being and highlighted the importance of such academic-industry collaborations in building a healthier society.
Ghee Hiang sesame oil has been highly regarded for its distinctive aroma and premium quality, and has played an integral role in Malaysian households, particularly in
postnatal confinement practices.
“Today, Ghee Hiang is extending its legacy by supporting academic initiatives that align with the growing interest in bioscience, healthy living, and natural wellness solutions.

Also present at the ceremony was graced by Puan Nor Liza Mohamad, Senior Assistant Director of Halal Management Division (JHEAIPP), who represented YB Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abdul Hamid, Deputy Chief Minister of Penang I, Dr Premalosini Ramanathan, Deputy Director (Medical) of the Penang State Health Department;
