The first phase of the Gurney Wharf project will be open to members of the public by July, 2023.

With 85.7% completion rate, the green lung, landscaping and recreation area is in the final stages of execution by the contractors.

There will also be vast green areas along with a promenade, vantage point, kiosks, park, toilets, car parks, skatepark and other open areas to enjoy.

Present for a site inspection earlier today was State Exco for Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning YB Jagdeep Singh Deo.

Also present was the new Penang Island City Council Mayor Dato A. Rajendran, Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI) general manager, Datin S. Bharathi, JKR engineer Goh Keat Rhee among others.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project has been delayed. However, we are looking forward to the completion of the first phase soon.

“Gurney Drive is an icon for the people of Penang and we will make sure that it is well-maintained. More local people and visitors can enjoy the facilities and nature in this site,” said Jagdeep, adding that Gurney Drive will become better.

The land area for this Phase 1 project is 101.8 acres.

Meanwhile, Rajedran added that despite the good value of land along Gurney Drive, the state government is mindful to allocate such a huge area for recreation.

Bharathi also added that they will call for tenders for Phase 2 and the completion for the project will be in 2024/5.
