Penang’s iconic trishaw peddlers received their second dose of Covid-19 vaccine thanks to the state government recently.
The vaccinations were carried out at the lobby of the Dewan Sri Pinang recently.
The trishaw operators also received food supplies, complimentary haircut, medical check-up, licensing and basic sanitisation of trishaws.
State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, Yeoh Soon Hin said that the programme is part of the re-branding of the sector and also to prepare for the re-opening of the tourism industry.
“We are mapping out a series of measures to rebrand Penang’s iconic trishaw peddlers, ensuring that these heritage icons embrace post-pandemic tourism with the necessary competencies.
“This vaccination initiative is part of our long term plan, which aligns with the state’s Responsible Tourism campaign that was launched to position Penang as a responsible tourist destination,” he said.
He also that the future of tourism will see an increased emphasis on authentic and unique experiences of a destination, with strict adherence to safety and health protocols.
“A fully vaccinated trishaw community is a pivotal tactic in gaining travellers faith. By then, tourists can tour George Town’s heritage enclave safely and confidently,” he added.
