As the Penang Yosakoi Parade 2025 enters its 10th year, this vibrant cultural celebration becomes one of Penang’s most anticipated multicultural events—attracting thousands of local and international visitors each year.
This event is not just about performance or pageantry—it is about people and connection. The Yosakoi Parade reflects a powerful representation of Penang’s identity: a state that embraces diversity, celebrates culture, and opens its doors to the world.
Present to announce the details of the event was Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy Yb Wong Hon Wai. Also present was Ms Emi Yamazaki, organising chairlady of the Penang Yosakoi Parade, Ms Jessie Lim, Miss Yosakoi 2024, Ms Nathalie Hong, Miss Yosakoi 2020 among others.
“This year, we have specially curated a vibrant lineup of pre-event activities to build an even stronger festive atmosphere leading up to the main celebration. The exciting schedule includes:
- Miss Yosakoi Pageant: 3:00 PM, 14th June 2025 at Gurney Plaza
- “Beyond Tradition” Exhibition: 15th to 22nd June 2025 at Gurney Plaza New Wing
- Japan Idol Groups Meet & Greet: 20th June 2025 at Gurney Plaza Old Wing
- Japan Yosakoi Dance Team Meet & Greet: 21st June 2025 at Esplanade
“These events not only enrich the experience of visitors and locals alike but also infuse the main festival with greater creativity and energy,” he said.
He shared that Penang’s George Town is proud to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its unique architecture, living traditions, and multicultural heritage. But our tourism strategy goes beyond monuments and food—we are building a tourism identity centred on stories, experiences, and shared values.
“Our goal is clear: to position Penang as a leading international cultural tourism hub. That is why we continue to invest in programmes that connect communities and cultures—offering more than sightseeing, but meaningful experiences that reflect who we are.

“Our friendship with Japan is a perfect example of this. Events like the Penang Yosakoi Parade, Penang Bon Odori, and Penang Aki Matsuri are more than festivals—they are bridges of understanding and unity.
“These celebrations light up our streets with joyful medleys of dance, music, costumes, games, and cuisine, while promoting cultural diplomacy and people-to-people ties.
“Penang is more than just a destination—it’s a community that welcomes the world with open arms. We aspire to be a truly international city that attracts visitors with a melting pot of celebrations and experiences.” said Wong.
He hoped that these events will continue to strengthen the enduring friendship between Malaysia and Japan, while highlighting our shared values of community, respect, and harmony.
“Today, there are over 100 Japanese companies operating in Penang, and about 3,500 Japanese expatriates who call this state home. You’ll find Japanese restaurants in almost every mall and neighbourhood.
“Penang also remains a favourite destination for Japanese travellers — who consistently rank among the top 10 nationalities arriving at the Penang International Airport.
“This partnership between culture and tourism strengthens Penang’s positioning as a regional leader in cultural innovation and diplomacy, added Wong.
He added that the Penang Yosakoi Parade is a shining example of what happens when cultures come together with mutual respect and creativity. The result is something truly spectacular — and deeply meaningful.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the organising team, the many volunteers, the performers, and our dedicated sponsors—Texchem Group, Brewspark Technologies, and CosWorld—for making this celebration possible.
“To all Malaysians, and to our international friends: I warmly invite you to join us for the Penang Yosakoi Parade 2025, taking place on 21 June. Come experience the rhythm, the colour, and the cultural harmony that define Penang’s place on the world stage,” added Wong.
