Penang welcomes the re-opening up of the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.
State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, Yeoh Soon Hin said that the state is looking forward to the resumption of the MICE from March 5, 2021 onwards following the announcement made by the Federal Government to allow the reopening of MICE in Movement Control Order areas.
“We have to ensure a safe reopening of the MICE events, however, through strict compliance for all business events.
“Penang has taken the lead by becoming the first state to introduce a standardised guideline for Penang business events last year to transition the industry towards new normal practices.
“Last year, my office launched several guidelines for the tourism industry, and we have a holistic guideline prepared for business events by Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB).
“This is also part of the state initiative and commitment to drive recovery of the business events in Penang as a premier destination.” said Yeoh in a press statement today.
He added that the resumption of MICE events will help to resuscitate the hotel industry which suffered a plunge in revenue following the implementation of MCO2.0.
“We encourage business events organisers and visitors to stay at hotels which complies strictly to the SOPs instead of unlicensed short term stay accommodations which do not need to adhere to such SOPs.
“My office has also initiated the Covid-19 state accreditation programme in Penang to ensure that tourism industry establishments meet and adhere to strict hygiene and safety standards set by the local authorities.
“We have hotels in Penang which have been vet by the relevant authorities, and received the Covid-19 safety accreditation to strengthen the preventive measures against Covid-19,” said Yeoh.
