The Penang state government is intensifying efforts to position the state as a premier hub for medical excellence and healthcare tourism in the region.
With a growing number of renowned medical centres and specialised hospitals, Penang continues to attract both local and international patients seeking high-quality medical care.
The latest addition to the state’s healthcare landscape is the Columbia Asia Hospital in Batu Kawan, which was recently opened and is set to play a pivotal role in expanding medical services on the mainland.
Then, there is the up-coming multi billion ringgit Penang Medi City mega project in Batu Kawan covering over 238 acres.
Penang State Executive Councillor for Youth, Sports and Health, YB Daniel Gooi, highlighted that the new Columbia Asia Hospital will offer a broad range of specialist services, further enhancing the state’s healthcare capacity.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the 32nd International Congress of the Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM), being held at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre, YB Gooi shared additional developments aligned with Penang’s medical tourism goals.
“As we continue the phased construction and expansion of the Penang International Airport (PIA), we are also engaging with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to establish a designated area for medical tourism within the new airport terminal,” said Gooi to Penang Hypercal recently.
“At these designated areas the medical tourism travellers can be assisted with their immigration and customs clearance to offer a smooth arrival experience and onward journey to the respective hospitals.
“This facility can be enhanced by a dedicated ambulance access from hospitals to cater to arriving medical tourists, providing added convenience, comfortable waiting areas, and dedicated pick-up points.
“Ultimately, this initiative is designed to enhance the patient experience and reinforce Penang’s reputation as a medical tourism destination.” he added.
Currently, Indonesian patients constitute the largest segment of Penang’s medical tourist arrivals, with huge potential from China also will strengthen the position of Penang as a major medical tourism hub within the region.
