The Penang state government celebrated the success of the recipients on being awarded the Michelin Star and Michelin Guide at the Amari SPICE Penang last night.

Lending presence to the colourful ceremony was Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow accompanied by State Exco for tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin.

Others present was Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan, Penang director for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Jonathan Freddy Bagang, Penang Tourism Malaysia director Shahrul Aman, Malaysian Tour and Travel Agents Association (MATTA) chairman, Vergis Mathews, Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter chairman, Tony Goh among other stakeholders.

One Michelin Star recipients

.The One Michelin Star was awarded to Au Jardin and Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery.

“Thank you for setting Penang as an international astronomical paradise. We are seeing a resilient rebound of our tourism industry since the reopening of international borders in April 2022.

“We are also welcoming international cruises to our shores from July 2022. The accreditation by Michelin Guide is a much-needed boost to the recovery of the tourism industry,” said Chow in his address.

Meanwhile, Yeoh started his speech with his question – some people ask do we really need a Michelin Guide to tell us where good food is in Penang ?

“Penang’s culinary scene is as diverse as the state itself and a Penang Michelin Guide is the perfect way to celebrate our culinary community. I believe the Michelin Guide is the Oscar award and the dream of every chef,” said Yeoh.

Later, he joined hands with Chow to hand out plaques to the various Michelin Guide recipients.
