Handing over ceremony

For the past 20 years, the Malaysia Hindu dharma Mamandram has been donating Deepavali cookies for the inmates of the Penang Prison here.

Again this year, present to hand over the cookies was chairman Thanabalan Nanda Kumar along with vice chairman, A. Krishnan, Secretary, S.Sugumaran and committee member SV. Manimaran.

They brought long 2,000 packets containing the seasonal favourites like muruku, mixture and athirasam.

“This year, the cookies were partly sponsored by the Om Sakti Spiritual and Charitable Association Butterworth.

“We are also presenting similar cookies at the Jawi Prison later in the day,” said Thanabalan.

He also thanked donors and state exco members for their generous donations to make the event a success.

On hand to receive the cookies was the deputy director of Penang Prison, superintendent Mohd Suhairi Awang and his team.

“We have about 2,238 inmates in this detention centre and 331 officers here.

“We welcome any NGO to present festive goodies for the inmates as it will bring some form of cheer to them,” said Mohd Suhairi.

He also added that although previously they had some outbreak of Covid-19 cases in the prison, all is under control now with strict SOPs in place.

“All of the inmates have been fully vaccinated to-date,” added Mohd Suhairi.

Syabas to Malaysia Hindu dharma Mamandram and its committee for its timely and commendable deed.
