A delegation from the Federation of Thai Industries, Songkhla made a courtesy call on Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn. Bhd recently.

They were led by Mr Suvit Tanratanakorn who led a delegation of 22 business representatives from the federation for a business networking session here.

Also present was the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang, Dato Rachada Jiwalai.

The Thai delegation was greeted by Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, chairman for Penang Port Commission (PPC) and his team.

Yeoh said that Southern Thailand traders are strategic partners for the Penang Port as they account for about 34% of Penang Port’s total cargo handled here. 

“Approximately 70% of Southern Thai cargo is exported through Penang Port, with these shipments accounting for 34% of the Penang Port’s total throughput.

“The Penang Port is proud to share valuable insights into its pivotal role in supporting South Thailand’s export activities. 

“Since over 70% of South Thailand’s export volume is channelled through Penang Port, rubber and rubberwood are among the primary commodities. 

“The cargo is transported via three main modes – road, rail, and barge with rail being the most utilized, accounting for approximately 46%, followed by road and then barge.

“As of August 2024, Penang Port has recorded a positive year-on-year growth in overall container throughput, achieving a 3.8% increase from 932,741 TEUs in 2023 to 968,532 TEUs in 2024.

“Notably, South Thailand contributed 166,551 TEUs up to August 2024, marking a 2.3% rise, which equates to approximately 3,800 TEUs more than the previous year”, added Yeoh.

Yeoh also highlighted that the steady growth underscores Penang Port’s ongoing commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and supporting trade. 

The South Thailand market remains a vital part of Penang Port’s business, and we remain fully committed to providing exceptional service to our valued customers.

During the meeting, he also encouraged Penang Port to have more business networking sessions with Southern Thailand traders. It will help jointly promote economic growth and mutual benefits for both countries. 

The networking session was also attended by Penang Port Sdn. Bhd.’s Head of Commercial & Stakeholder Management Division, Nazri Ismail and Head of Department (Southern Thailand and Liners), Summer Cheah.
