Penang Governor Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak took time off from his busy schedule to launch the “Penang Goes Orange 2021” state level campaign at the Penang Harmony Centre.
Also present was State Exco for Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs, Chong Eng and the CEO of Penang Women’s Development Corporation, Ong Bee Leng.
The campaign is aimed at creating more awareness on the issue of domestic violence towards women in the state among members of the public.
“Other than creating awareness, this campaign will also create space for the victims to find solutions out of their predicament.
“I am confident that the state will carry out this programme successfully . which runs into its 8th campaign. This also shows the creativity of the Penang Women’s Development Corporation to send the right message to the public,” said Tun Ahmad Fuzi.
The “Penang Goes Orange 2021” is themed Safe Family: Connect, Commit, Collective.
“We must always strive to contain domestic violence at all times for the good of the community. The initiative is not the sole responsibility of the individual, victim or the state,” he added.
He called on everyone from the public, private sector and NGOs to fight the menace.
In the meanwhile Chong Eng in her speech said 2021 has seen the campaign going into its 8th year.
“We are honoured with the presence of the Governor to officiate our programme and this shows his interest and keenness in areas concerning the family.
“The MCO implemented has to a certain extent contributed to an increase in cases of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a social problem which should be addressed. It has implications on children, the victim and the community overall,” added Chong Eng.
She also added that PWDC is proactive to help and shelter those affected irrespective of race or religion.
More guests joined the launching event virtually in keeping with SOPs.
