Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak was the guest-of-honour at the Penang state level Deepavali celebrations held last night at the SK Han Chiang Hall.

More than 1,000 guests turned up for the colourful gathering. They were treated to a host of song and dance numbers.

Also present was Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow along with Penang Speaker Dato Seri Law Choo Kiang, Deputy Chief Minister 11, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo, State Exco Dato Seri Rajoo, YB Daniel Gooi, state assemblyman for Komtar, YB Teh Lai Heng, Penang Island City Council Mayor, Dato A Rajendran and a host of other dignitaries.

Lending support were the various consul generals based in Penang.

In his welcoming address Chow expressed his gratitude that residents in Penang can celebrate the Festival of Lights in peace and harmony.

“I also wish to thank the Governor for making his presence tonight and representatives from the state government and civil servants too.

“Deepavali is a meaningful celebration which is celebrated by people from all walks of life. It is a celebration where people can come together with their family and friends.

“The state government will continue to promote harmony and cooperation among the various communities in the state. We have also assisted needy students with education funds through the Hindu Endowment Board for the benefit of Indian students”, added Chow.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep welcomed all who had taken time to turn up for the state level Deepavali celebrations.

“Penang is a multinational and multicultural state with people from all over the world coming here. In this respect I also would like to draw attention to the growing number of international investors coming to Penang. This development is much welcomed as it offers job opportunities and also demand for loca talents in the various industries”, he added.

Guests were feted to a variety of local dishes too.
