Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow visited the Thai Pak Koong Temple along King Street which has won the 2021 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Asia Pacific awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
The temple is 211-years-old.and is also a major tourist attraction in the city.
“The UNESCO Bangkok office named this temple as one of the nine award winning projects in six countries. The others are in Bangladesh, China, India, Japan and Thailand.
“The temple was recognised for its location, technical accomplishments and sustainability and impact,” said Chow.
Also present during the visit was state exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, Yeoh Soon Hin and temple committee chairman Datuk Lio Chee Yeong.
In congratulating the temple, Chow also added that the temple committee has been doing a well deserved job in the restoration of the temple.
He also toured to see for himself the various works being carried out at the temple.
Lio shared that they had budgeted RM3 million for the restoration work and work started from 2017.
