In conjunction with the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2022, the Penang bridge (first bridge) is the only day it is closed and runners can run or walk on the iconic bridge.
So, it was not surprising that some 26,000 local and foreign runners took part this year (Sunday, Dec 11).
The bridge saw a “sea of runners” at the event. The competition is making a comeback after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Present was Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow and State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin among others at the flag-off and prize giving ceremony.
Judging from the emphatic response from runners, surely the event is a “runaway” success.
Competition was divided into 10km, 21km and full marathon 42km. Participants were presented with medals and certificates of participation.
Meanwhile, a team of Kenyans swept the men’s and women’s full marathon top spots.
The run also brought economic spinoff through sports tourism as many hotels were fully booked and other stakeholders experiencing brisk business.
Syabas Penang State Government for hosting the international event successfully.
