The Penang State Government is in talks with budget carrier IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Limited) to offer direct flights between Chennai and Penang.
Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai said that talks are ongoing to finalise the route.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the Memorandum signing ceremony between Juneyao Airlines and Penang Global Tourism yesterday.
IndiGo is headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. It is the largest airline in India by passengers carried and fleet size, with a 60.6% domestic market share as of April 2024.
They are also the largest individual airline in Asia, and one of the largest in the world in terms of passengers carried, with more than 100 million passengers carried in 2023.
As of May 2024, IndiGo operates 2,000 daily flights to 122 destinations – 88 domestic and 34 international with a fleet of 350 aircrafts.
They have also placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircrafts to help expand their international network to long-haul destinations.
