Penang will strive to plant 600,000 trees inline with its Vision 2030 and its Green agenda.
State Exco for Housing, Local Government and Town & Country Planning, Jagdeep Singh Deo said that currently they have already planted some 408,352 trees in the state.
“I wish to congratulate the Penang Island City Council on achieving this feat but also call upon them to strive for this new target,” said Jagdeep at the launching ceremony of the Karpal Singh Drive Recycling Station at the Auto Mall.
Also present was the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur Section (PCCCC YES) vice president cum Yes advisor Dato Oon Weng Boon, PCCC general committee member Lee Tong Leon, Dylan Lee Chee How from the Penang Island City Council , PCCC cum YES vice chairman Alec Ooi and Penang Green Council, general manager Josephine Tan Mei Ling.
Jagdeep also congratulated the Penang Green Council for their commendable and continuous efforts.
“More trees means more oxygen and it augurs well for the environment. I also call on the Federal Government to look at Penang and make it an example for the Green agenda,” added Jagdeep.
To this regard, he will also meet the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican to discuss the matter.
“This location is very suitable for recycling projects as it has high human traffic and also in the process teaches the younger generation on recycling,” said Jagdeep.
The new station will help members of the public dispose of materials like e-waste, plastic, paper and aluminum in a safe manner. They will also earn points which can be converted to Touch n Go eWallet.
In the meantime, PCCC wil also look for lore locations to implement the recycling stations in the city.
