Inmates at the Bethel Hill Old Folks Home in Kuala Nerang (Kedah) had a memorable and meaningful visit by some 70 children from an International school from Penang recently.
The commendable venture was put together by the StarCity Hotel Alor Setar led by their general manager, Eugene Dass and sales and marketing manager, Justlyn Lai and team.
The students were accompanied by a team of eight teachers.
On hand to greet the visitors was the home’s caretaker, Ms Loy Kim Moy and William Khor.
Upon arrival, the students went to work to clean-up the surroundings, landscape clearing, room cleaning, general dusting and other tasks.
“This is not the first time such projects are being organized as it has been going on for the past 17 years. We have been working closely with International schools on this form of corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects to benefit the community, needy and the aged.
“We try to focus on rural areas where there is great need for assistance and aid. Through this project, the students get to experience first hand the feel of community work with the locals in Kedah, ” said Dass.
The Bethel Hill home which houses some 18 inmates were also treated to a day of fun and board games and cheerful mingling sessions.
Upon completion of their tasks, the team headed back to Alor Setar for a good rest at the StarCity Hotel and for the preparation for onward travel to Langkawi the next day
While in Langkawi, the students had the chance to do some sightseeing, experience the mangrove tour, and also enjoy the wonderful sunset, not forgetting to shop for their chocolates before heading home.
Meanwhile, the Bethel Hill Old Folks Home was founded by Ms Elizabeth Hale, from the United States in 1965.
Her work in Malaysia had brought much positive impact on numerous lives here through her community and charitable work.
Inmates of the home are productive citizens and contribute to their community through caring for the livestock, working in the garden and helping their fellow residents through community service.
Presently, Ms Low is working on a mini museum and further expansion of the home as a tribute to Hale and hopes to secure contributions and donors for electrical work and other projects.
