The MATTA Penang Chapter hosted a delightful appreciation and networking durian session in Balik Pulau earlier today, bringing together tourism industry stakeholders, MATTA members and exhibitors for an enjoyable morning of fellowship and camaraderie.

Guests were warmly welcomed by MATTA Penang Chairwoman Ms Carolyn Leong accompanied by members of her committee.

Also present was MATTA President Nigel Wong and Abdul Hadi Che Man, Tourism Malaysia Northern region Director along with exhibitors from the recent MATTA Fair, MAH Penang members, industry partners and MATTA members, all eager to savour Penang’s world-renowned “King of Fruits”.President Nigel Wong

The gathering showcased some of the finest durians harvested from the famed orchards of Balik Pulau, a region synonymous with premium-quality durian cultivation. Among the prized varieties served were the highly sought-after Black Thorn and Musang King, as well as local favourites such as Hor Lor, Red Prawn, Lipan and Ang Bak Kia.

Freshly harvested and at peak ripeness, the durians were enthusiastically enjoyed by guests, who relished the opportunity to sample the distinctive flavours and textures that have made Penang durians famous far beyond Malaysia’s shores.

“Events like this provide a wonderful platform for MATTA members and industry partners to strengthen relationships while showcasing one of Penang’s most iconic tourist attractions. Durian tourism continues to attract visitors from around the region, and we are proud to support initiatives that highlight the unique experiences Penang has to offer,” said Leong.

Beyond being a social and networking event, the session also highlighted the growing importance of durian tourism in Penang.

The state government has been actively promoting “durian tourism” as a niche travel experience, attracting visitors from key markets including China, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore.

During the durian season, many tourists make special trips to Penang to visit orchards, learn about durian cultivation and indulge in freshly opened fruit straight from the farm. Many malls, hotels and resorts also have their own durian promotions and packages to share with their guests.

Reflecting Penang’s embrace of innovation and technology, many durians today are equipped with QR codes that allow buyers to trace the fruit’s origin, orchard source and variety, providing greater transparency and assurance of authenticity.

It is a perfect blend of tradition and technology, thus proving that in Penang, durian lovers can truly enjoy their favourite fruit with confidence and convenience.

Now that’s what you call “Penang durian on the go!”
