In a commendable effort to keep our beaches clean and pristine, the “Let’s Clean It Up Malaysia” programme saw some 100 children from SRJC (C) Pai Chai and SK Batu Ferringhi along with volunteers from HP Malaysia participating.

The community programme was held at the beachfront of the Lone Pine Penang, A Tribute Portfolio Resort here.

Lending support was Penang State Exco for Housing and Environment Dato Seri Sundarajoo Somu, representing Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Penang Mayor Dato A Rajendran and resort general manager Dato Gulab Mahatam Rai.

The community project was put together by Panjam, Redo and Aimpactz. Representing these organisations were Goh Shu Xian, Dr Choong Jian Ming, Khou Jerome, Mageswari Pattel, Henry Teh from Malaysian Humanitarian Foundation, Sandy Khaw from Lean Lee Trading and Dominic Chew from HP.

“It is vital to learn the importance of throwing rubbish indiscriminately as the rubbish and plastic will clog up the drains and eventually lead to flooding.

“It is the same with the seas and oceans as the discarded items will wash up on our beach fronts and create unpleasant sights for us as well as tourists,” said Sundarajoo.

The Let’s Clean It Up Malaysia initiative is also held in 60 locations across the country with 10,000 participants in Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Malacca, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.

After a photo session, the participants trooped to the beach front and commenced with the picking up of rubbish armed with tongs, rakes and biodegradable plastic bags.

After almost an hour of clean-up, the children were feted to a well deserved breakfast.
