The Ismaili CIVIC Centre celebrated Labour Day with more than 100 volunteers gathering at their centre in Kuala Lumpur for a morning of fun, learning and giving back to the community.
The participants who were from Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Thailand and Singapore managed to engage three different but significant partners to mark the culmination of the three-day Far East Festival.
Close to 60 youth from Yayasan Chow Kit and Lighthouse Children Welfare Home Association, Kuala Lumpur & Selangor were treated to an exclusive morning of excitement.
It began with a zumba session, followed by fun-fair type games including futsal. They were thrilled to enjoy lunch, and treats from pop-corn and candy floss live stations.
Their most delighted moment was when Ismaili youths appeared dressed as Elsa, Spiderman and Ironman – every child felt like it was their birthday.
“We are so privileged by the Ismaili community giving spirit to our kids from Chow Kit. Our kids truly enjoyed this Labour Day weekend and had lots of fun with your volunteers,” said Ananti Rajasingam, CEO of Yayasan Chow Kit.
Visiting members found new appreciation of nature and the nurture it brings, when Ng Seksan, @kebunkebunbangsar founder led the group and introduced them to the concept of their community garden which has turned into a natural gathering space for the neighbourhood.
“Without your partnership, we would not be able to grow our space. Today, we are looking to support government initiatives to establish more than 100 such community gardens across Malaysia. We appreciate the Ismaili Community’s support from our founding days,” said Ng Seksan.
Volunteers managed to harvest more than 55 kg of fresh vegetables. They joined hands making for light work during this month’s exclusive harvest which was then shared with Pertiwi Soup Kitchen.
At the end of the day, they managed to make a small but meaningful contribution to the community around us.
