In a first-of-its-kind collaboration in Penang, the Iconic Marjorie Penang, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott International, has teamed up with Sanrio to introduce an exclusive collection of themed guest rooms inspired by three of the Japanese brand’s most beloved characters – Hello Kitty, Kuromi and Cinnamoroll.
The collaboration marks a significant milestone for Penang’s hospitality industry, offering guests and Sanrio fans an immersive stay experience where every room is thoughtfully designed with character-inspired décor, furnishings and whimsical touches that bring the globally adored icons to life.
The themed rooms are expected to appeal to families, couples, collectors and travellers seeking unique accommodation experiences, further strengthening Penang’s position as a lifestyle and tourism destination.
The colourful launch ceremony was officiated by Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, who welcomed the collaboration as another innovative tourism offering that complements the state’s growing portfolio of world-class attractions and hospitality experiences.
In his speech, Chow hailed the collaboration as more than a branding exercise.

“It reflects that long-term friendship between Penang and Japan – a relationship that has continued to grow over the last five decades.
“Japan has been one of Penang’s closest partners since the early days of our industrialization. In the 1970s, Japanese companies were among the pioneers that placed their confidence in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone. Their investments laid the foundation for Penang’s transformation into the advanced manufacturing and technology hub that we are today.
“Penang is home to around 120 Japanese companies while more than 3,000 Japanese expatriates live and work here,” shared Chow.
He also hailed the collaboration as a fusion with Penang’s Peranakan heritage as Hello Kitty is one of Japan’s most recognizable cultural icons.

Also present were Datuk Seri Tan Kean Tet, Chairman of Iconic Group; Andree Susilo, Vice President, Hotel Development, Asia Pacific, Marriott International; Kohei Imai, Chief Operating Officer of Sanrio Southeast Asia; Katherine Tan, Executive Director of Iconic Group; Pauline Chua, Group General Manager of Iconic Group; alongside government officials, industry partners and invited guests.
Located in Bayan Lepas, the 298-room Iconic Marjorie Penang was officially launched as Penang’s first Tribute Portfolio Hotel under Marriott International. Inspired by the island’s rich Peranakan heritage, the five-star property combines contemporary luxury with local cultural influences and is also recognised as Penang’s first hotel to achieve the Green Building Index (GBI) Gold certification, underscoring its commitment to sustainable hospitality.
The Sanrio collaboration is expected to become one of the hotel’s signature attractions, creating memorable experiences for guests while celebrating the timeless appeal of Hello Kitty, the mischievous yet lovable Kuromi, and the gentle cloud puppy Cinnamoroll. By bringing together internationally recognised characters with premium hospitality, Iconic Marjorie Penang aims to deliver a stay that blends comfort, creativity and nostalgia for visitors of all ages.
