“Today, we have made history with the launch of this first transit home for the homeless in the country. This is in line with our Penang Vision2030 plans.

“We take a serious view on the issues of the homeless people as it not only can lead to social problems but can also bring a negative image for the city.

“Although we realise we cannot eradicate the problem, at least this project is in the right direction. Under the “Empowering The Street Citizen”, we not only provide shelter but also basic necessities for the homeless.

“I also wish to thank the private sector and the non-governmental organisations for their contribution in making this programme a success,” said Chow.

Meanwhile, Rajendran added that the building was renovated at a cost of RM4.4 million with 14,741 sq feet area. The premises can accommodate some 88 inmates and there are facilities for a cafe, laundry, cater for handicapped, recreation area and also provide skills training,” said Rajendran.

It is also a net zero building with green elements along with urban farming areas.
