Great news for Korean food lovers.
The very first CU Convenience store opened at the City Junction Penang in Tanjung Tokong today.
A simple ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening of the outlet.
On hand was the Chief Executive Officer (Retail) of Mynews Holdings Berhad , Ms Low Chooi Hoon and her team from Kuala Lumpur.
Low also took the the media team and early customers on a familiarization tour of the store to introduce the various Korean food items they stock.
“CU is the No 1 Korean convenience store outlet and we are happy to bring Korean street food to Penang. “We know Penang has a lot of good food but we are bringing the taste of Korea to Penang.
“Consumers can look forward to a variety of Korean inspired food and snacks which are freshly made from our Food Processing Center which is Halal certified to provide authentic Korean fresh food and snacks,” said Low who herself was clad in a traditional Hanbok costume befitting the occasion.
Among the hot favorites are the Tteokbokki (rice cake), Odeng (fish cake), Dakgangjeong (Fried Chicken), Corn dog, Kimbap (seaweed rice rolls) and more.
Besides imported food and beverages, CU will also offer beauty and cosmetic products and daily essentials. Most notable would be the inclusion of CU’s leading house brands Heyroo and Delaffe which are popular amongst the consumers.
Currently, CU has 40 outlets around the country mainly in the Klang Valley, Seremban, Ipoh and Johor Baru.
“We are also planning another outlet in the mainland in Bukit Mertajam soon. The vast choice of Korean food will surely teleport one to Korea,” added Low.
This new outlet which has eight employees will operate from 7am to 12am.
CU is run and operated by BGFretail Group in South Korea and with more than 15,000 stores will be operated by Mynews Holdings Berhad in Malaysia, the leading convenience retail chain in the country.
Korean street food and culture is fast growing in popularity among the younger generations thanks to the influence of K Pop and Korean serials.
