The Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang will soon be rebranded as the Gurney Bay Hotel.
Located along one of the most popular tourist belts on the island, the new hotel will be a Parkroyal Partner Hotel.
A signing ceremony will be held next week in the attendance of Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow to formalise the arrangement.
The new owners are the MTT Hospitality Sdn Bhd are led by their group chairman Dato Seri Kenny Ong.
The 5-star Evergreen Laurel Hotel in its heyday was a hive of activity for private, corporate and government functions.
It has 179 rooms and suites in various categories and offers a grand ballroom, swimming pool, gym, coffee house, lounge, business centre, tennis court, kids club among other facilities.
It should be noted that the whole Gurney Drive area is currently undergoing a major resurgence for the hospitality industry with the first Penang Marriott Hotel brand which opened recently.
Then, there is the Westin Hotel and Residences which is under construction down the road. Other established hotels already in the vicinity are the Ascott Gurney Penang, G Hotel Gurney and the G Kelawai.
According to MTT posting on their website, “This strategic acquisition aligns seamlessly with the ongoing redevelopment of Gurney Bay’s waterfront area, promising to enhance the experience for residents and tourists alike.
“Acquiring the hotel coincides with Gurney Bay’s ambitious redevelopment project aimed at transforming the waterfront into a dynamic and attractive destination.
“The project encompasses the creation of a picturesque park, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and inviting waterfront promenades, all of which are situated right at the hotel’s doorstep. This holistic approach to urban renewal underscores Penang’s commitment to fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors.
