In recognising Penang’s rise as a major power in the global semiconductor industry, a documentary film entitled “Against All Odds, Against All Odds: The Rise of Silicon Penang” was produced to record the meteoric rise.

Guest-of-honour at the launch ceremony was the Governor of Penang Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak.

A gathering to mark the special event was held at Anjung Seri Mutiara yesterday.

The documentary film was made by Image Farm Productions and organised by the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA).

Also present was Penang Chief Minister YAB how Kon Yeow along with MSIA President Dato’ Seri Wong Siew Hai, Former Chief Minister of Penang, Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon; YB. Zairil Khir Johari, Penang State EXCO for Infrastructure, Transport & Digital; YB. Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI); Mr. Lim Chien Cheng, son of the late Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Lim Chong Eu and other distinguished guests.

The documentary encapsulates Penang’s remarkable journey from a modest island to a global semiconductor powerhouse. This transformation began over five decades ago with the establishment of the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone in 1972, a strategic initiative that laid the foundation for Penang’s evolution into the Silicon Valley of the East.

During the event, Tun also witnessed the presentation of a donation by Dato’ Seri Wong Siew Hai to YBhg. Dato’ Seri Sr. Haji Rozali Haji Mohamud, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Amal TYT and a panel discussion moderated by the President.

Tun also commended MSIA for the success of the film premiere, describing it as a testament to Penang’s collective achievements and a beacon of inspiration for the future.
