Some 18 doctors braved the heavy downpour this morning to cycle around Penang to raise RM20,000 towards the Arthritis Foundation Malaysia (AFM).

They were participants in the 52nd Annual Scientific Meeting at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre which starts from tomorrow till June 17, 2023.

The aim of the cycling feat was to create awareness for arthritis, a debilitating condition affecting millions of individuals worldwide

Present to present the mock cheque to representatives of the AFM was Penang Chief Minister 1 Dato Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, MOA president Prof Dr Tunku Kamarul Zaman and Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekeran.

Also present was arthritis patient, Ms Ding Mee Hing, 62, from Sitiawan, Perak who has been suffering from arthritis for the past 40 years.

“I have already done replacement surgery on my hips and knees and am now free from pain now. It is better to do the surgery so that one can have mobility and movement,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA) is the oldest and largest fraternity of orthopaedic surgeons in Malaysia with a membership of 700 practitioners.

Some 2,000 delegates from 16 countries are expected to attend.

“In Malaysia, some 30.8% of those above 55-years of age are susceptible to arthritis. There is no cure for this disease but we can only slow down its process,” said Prof Dr Tunku Kamarul.

The meeting will see some 66 booths from various countries including those from the medical products in Penang.
