Penang is set to further strengthen its appeal as a favourite destination for Chinese travellers with the launch of daily direct flights by Spring Airlines from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Penang International Airport (PEN).
This milestone service makes Spring Airlines the third carrier to operate the Shanghai–Penang route, joining Juneyao Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, and further enhancing travel options between China and Malaysia.
The new service, operating under flight numbers 9C7295/9C7250, will commence on 30 January 2026 with daily flights using Airbus A320 aircraft. The flight arrives in Penang at 2:30 pm local time and departs for Shanghai at 3:30 pm, offering travellers convenient schedules and seamless round-trip connectivity. Covering approximately 3,645 kilometres in just under six hours, the route makes Penang more accessible than ever for visitors from Shanghai and surrounding regions.
Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, highlighted that although the initial approval is for a seasonal period, strong demand is expected to lead to an extended or permanent service, reflecting Penang’s growing popularity among Chinese tourists.
“With this daily direct connection, Penang is now linked to one of China’s most dynamic global cities, reinforcing its position as a premier destination for Chinese visitors. China remains one of Malaysia’s key source markets, and improved air connectivity will play a crucial role in driving higher tourist arrivals from Shanghai and beyond,” he said.
The increased influx of visitors is expected to further energise Penang’s vibrant tourism landscape, bringing positive spillover effects to local businesses, communities, and the wider hospitality ecosystem. The expansion of air links also underscores Malaysia’s commitment to deepening ties with China while supporting the continued growth of its aviation and tourism sectors.
Yeoh expressed confidence that more travellers from Shanghai will soon discover Penang’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, world-famous cuisine, rich multicultural heritage, and diverse attractions—solidifying Penang’s reputation as one of Malaysia’s most loved destinations and a key gateway to the region.
