The Bon Odori Festival 2026 was held at the Esplanade last night in a colourful and grandeur fashion.
Joining the celebrations was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai along with the Consul General of Japan in Penang, HE Mr Shinya Machida, Penang City Council Mayor Dato A. Rajendran and host of VIP guests.
The gathering not only celebrates the rich culture and traditions of Japan, but also commemorates the enduring friendship between Malaysia and Japan, a relationship that has continued to flourish over the decades.
Wong also took part in the cultural dance session and displayed his self defense skills too. In his opening speech, Wong described the festival as much more than a festive celebration.

“It is a celebration of unity, cultural appreciation and community spirit. Through traditional dances, music, cuisine, performances and a wide range of cultural activities, this festival brings together people from diverse backgrounds, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction and connection. It reminds us that culture has the remarkable power to unite communities, foster mutual understanding and build friendships that transcend borders.
“Japanese companies such as Ibiden, Toray and Panasonic, together with many other Japanese corporations, have long been valued investment partners of Penang. Today, many Japanese nationals also choose to work, study and retire in Penang, further reflecting the close people-to-people ties between our state and Japan.

“Penang has always embraced multiculturalism, inclusivity and international collaboration. As a vibrant tourism destination, we are proud to host cultural events that showcase the rich heritage of different communities while offering both local residents and visitors from around the world enriching and authentic cultural experiences.
“Over the years, the Penang Bon Odori Festival has become one of Penang’s signature cultural events, attracting thousands of visitors annually and further strengthening Penang’s reputation as an international tourism destination where diverse cultures come together in harmony,” added Wong.

He also expressed my heartfelt appreciation to Boon Siew Honda Sdn. Bhd. for its generous support of this year’s festival. In particular, Mr. Kunitomo Asano, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Boon Siew Honda Sdn.
