Ascott Gurney Penang launched its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to sponsor trishaw riders whose livelihood had been greatly affected by the pandemic.
Present was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin along with Mondi Mecja, Ascott Malaysia Country General Manager, Shahrul Aman Sabir Ahmad, Director of Tourism Malaysia, Northern Region, Pn Siti Hajar, Jonathan Freddy P. Bagang Director of MOTAC Penang along with general manager Sharon Ang and associates.
In commending the hotel, Yeoh said that he is proud and delighted to be present to witness the adoption of Penang’s ‘BECA’ Trishaw community by Ascott Gurney Penang.
“Efforts as such are truly applauded as I was informed that Ascott Gurney Penang will
undertake in its upkeep and maintenance of our Penang Trishaws or fondly called as Beca , hence enhancing income of these Trishaw riders by promoting to all your in – house guests with various promotions.
“Besides the novelty of sitting in a trishaw, it allows tourists the opportunity to visit the sights at a more unhurried pace, enabling them to stop at any point to take photographs and buy souvenirs.
“Trishaw riders are well-equipped with information and wisdom about sightseeing in the routes they have passed through, and can tell stories of the past to passengers in every attraction within the heritage area,” said Yeoh.
The trishaw riders were presented with hampers and took the VIP guests on a short ride around the Gurney area.
Yeoh also encouraged other hotels and resorts to follow the footsteps of Ascott Gurney Penang.
