In conjunction with the up-coming Chinese New Year celebrations, three illuminating structures have been put up at the Esplanade here.
They are in the shapes of dragon, phoenix and ox.
The sculptures measuring 188ft-long and 15ft-tall at Esplanade are a sight to behold, being the longest illuminated dragon sculptures displayed in Penang thus far.
Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, Yeoh Soon Hin, officially lit up the sculptures yesterday (Sunday, Feb 7) to mark the launching.
The illuminated sculptures will be lit up every evening from 7pm to midnight for one month.
“The dragon has always been a symbol of strength and vitality. The phoenix has always been regarded as a symbol of harmony and auspicious.
“Together they bring a symbol of harmony and good fortune, in hope that 2021 will be a much better year for all of us,” he added.
He added that although Chinese New Year celebrations are significantly toned down this year, the festivity can still be observed in a safe way and in adherence to SOPs.
“Unfortunately, the Penang Chap Goh Meh celebration had to be called off this year.
“However, CNY has always been a celebration which holds cultural significance as it marks the start of a new year, bringing about a refreshed and renewed year ahead.
“More than just a belief, it is also a time of gratitude, blessings and well wishes for our loved ones and friends.
“While 2020 has been a challenging year, we mark this festivity in hope that it will bring about a better year ahead with our loved ones, in health and prosperity.
“Hence, I hope that these sculptures can share joy and bring cheer to everyone at this festival,” he said in a press statement.
