Olivia Newton-John, the British/Australian pop star who was well known for her iconic role in “Grease”, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, and since then she has been an outspoken advocate for breast cancer research.
The cancer recurrence in 2017, after repeated treatments for cancer, Newton-John passed away at the age of 73 recently.
The news of her passing sent a shock wave worldwide.
However, her effort in advocating early screening saves lives did not go unnoticed. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting women in Malaysia. About 1 in 19 women in this country are at risk.
In the local scene, Penang Adventist Hospital is truly blessed to have a donor who is just as passionate about creating awareness on breast cancer, the donor feels that the awareness of early screening saves lives is just not strongly advocated here locally.
With the faith to encourage women to take charge of breast health and combat breast cancer through early detection, the donor is generously donating 200 free mammogram screening during September & October for ladies in B-40 category in-conjunction with our upcoming Pink Vroom – Charity Ride for Breast Cancer.
With this meaningful initiative from the donor, Penang Adventist Hospital will reach out to several state assemblyman offices, community areas, and women’s groups to promote the Free Mammogram campaign with the intention to remind the women to do early screenings.
Free Mammogram campaign has started since June 2022, with 300 ladies screened thus far, with the following criteria:
Free Mammogram Criteria:
• Age 40 and above
• Malaysia citizen or permanent resident
• Household income less than RM5,000
We strongly encourage women to take the first step to do mammogram screening and do so regularly.
