A thousand years of Bordeaux heritage meets the tropical waters of Langkawi, Malaysia, as The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi presents an exclusive Château de Lamarque Wine Dinner at its award-winning Chinese restaurant, Hai Yan on 31 October 2026.

Taking place against the dramatic backdrop of the Andaman Sea, the evening offers discerning diners the rare opportunity to discover the story of Château de Lamarque through a curated selection of its wines, accompanied by an elevated Chinese menu created especially for the occasion.

Joining guests for the dinner will be Pierre-Gilles Gromand d’Evry, owner of Château de Lamarque and seventh-generation custodian of the estate, offering a personal insight into one of Médoc’s most historic wine families.

A LEGACY THAT SPANS A MILLENNIUM
Few Bordeaux estates can speak of a history as deeply intertwined with the region as Château de Lamarque. Located in the Haut-Médoc, Château de Lamarque traces its origins to the 11th century, with the original fortified château built between 1050 and 1090. The estate describes itself as the oldest château in the Médoc, with a thousand-year history and a family story that has continued across generations. Today, the estate is under the stewardship of the 25th generation of the family and the seventh generation to oversee its wine estate.

The family’s connection to Bordeaux wine extends well beyond Lamarque. Over the centuries, the Fumel family was associated with several of the region’s most prestigious estates, including Château Haut-Brion, Château Margaux and Brane-Mouton, which later became Mouton Rothschild.

Today, Château de Lamarque encompasses 48 hectares in the Haut-Médoc appellation and is a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux. Its wines are shaped by a commitment to the estate’s terroir, with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot planted according to the characteristics of individual parcels. The estate also places emphasis on gentle vinification, respect for the fruit and extended ageing. It is this living heritage that guests will encounter during the evening, with Pierre-Gilles Gromand d’Evry sharing the story behind the château, its vineyards and the generations of custodians who have carried its legacy forward.

BORDEAUX THROUGH THE LENS OF HAI YAN
The setting for this rare encounter is equally distinctive. Perched above giant rocks rising from the sea, Hai Yan is The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi’s signature Chinese dining destination, featuring expansive overwater decks with views extending across the East, South and West. Its setting creates an atmospheric meeting point between the natural beauty of Langkawi and the refinement of contemporary Chinese dining. Known for its authentic Chinese cuisine presented with finesse, Hai Yan pairs its culinary offering with panoramic ocean views, curated wines and private dining experiences.

For the Château de Lamarque dinner, this setting becomes the backdrop for an unusual yet harmonious dialogue between French winemaking heritage and Chinese culinary tradition.

AN EVENING OF WINE AND CULINARY CRAFT
The evening begins with a selection of canapés, including Deep-Fried Chicken Stuffed with Truffle Paste, Dragon Chives and Bean Curd Skin, Prawn Tartlet Har Gao, and Pie Tee with Assorted Mushrooms and Macadamia Nuts, accompanied by SO Bastor Lamontagne Crémant de Bordeaux Brut 2024.

The first course presents Steamed Australian Lobster with Ginger-Scallion Emulsion, Confit Leek and Lobster-Soy Beurre Blanc, paired with Château de Lamarque 2017. The wine journey continues through three vintages, each paired with a distinctive main course.

Tea-Smoked Duck Breast with Cherry & Port Compote, Celeriac Silk, Toasted Hazelnut and Red Wine Jus is matched with Château de Lamarque 2022, followed by Five-Spiced Pigeon with Pigeon Jus, Fermented Plum, Charred Japanese Eggplant and Lotus Root Crisp, paired with the 2015 vintage.

The final savoury course brings Charcoal-Grilled Australian Sliced Wagyu Striploin, Black Truffle Potato, Charred Baby Leek and Black Garlic Jus to the table alongside Château de Lamarque 2020 Magnum. Dessert continues the Asian-inspired flavour profile with Goji Berry Sponge, Red Bean Ganache, Black Sesame Praline, Mandarin Gel and Peach, paired with Château Bastor-Lamontagne Sauternes 2022, before the evening concludes with chocolate, freshly brewed  coffee and a premium selection of teas.

More than a wine-paired dinner, the evening offers a rare meeting of heritage, provenance and place: the centuries-old story of a Bordeaux family estate, the culinary artistry of Hai Yan and the extraordinary natural setting of Langkawi.

For The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi, the experience reflects the resort’s approach to dining as a gateway to discovery, bringing together exceptional ingredients, distinctive destinations and stories worth remembering.
