Penang’s reputation as one of Asia’s premier durian destinations is once again drawing international visitors, as the state recently welcomed the first batch of durian enthusiasts arriving through Penang International Airport during the peak durian season.
The arrival marks an encouraging start to Penang’s “durian tourism” campaign, which leverages the global appeal of the “King of Fruits” to attract visitors seeking authentic farm-to-table experiences and unique culinary adventures.
Present to greet the visitors were YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy and representatives from Penang Global Tourism (PGT) led by its Chief Executive Officer, Ooi Chok Yan.
The collaboration is by Tourism Malaysia Hong Kong Office and Wing On Travel.
The group, primarily from Hong Kong, expressed excitement at the prospect of indulging in Penang’s world-renowned durian varieties, including the highly sought-after Musang King, Black Thorn and other premium cultivars grown across the island and mainland.
Beyond enjoying the fruit itself, the visitors are expected to explore Penang’s thriving durian orchards, many of which offer immersive experiences such as orchard tours, fruit-tasting sessions and opportunities to learn about the cultivation and heritage of Malaysia’s most celebrated fruit.
Durian tourism has emerged as a niche yet growing segment within Penang’s tourism landscape, attracting travellers from regional markets who plan their visits around the annual harvest season. The initiative not only showcases Penang’s agricultural strengths but also supports local farmers, orchard operators and tourism-related businesses, creating economic opportunities across the value chain.
“Durian tourism is a unique niche that highlights Penang’s strengths in agro-tourism and gastronomy. Every durian season presents an opportunity to attract visitors who not only come to enjoy our premium durians but also stay longer to experience Penang’s rich culture, heritage, cuisine and natural attractions. We look forward to welcoming more international visitors throughout the season,” added Wong to Penang Hyperlocal.
As global interest in experiential and food-based travel continues to grow, Penang is well-positioned to capitalize on its status as a leading durian destination. With its rich culinary heritage, vibrant cultural attractions and internationally acclaimed durian offerings, the state continues to strengthen its appeal as a must-visit destination for travellers seeking authentic Malaysian experiences.
The arrival of this first durian tourism group signals a promising season ahead, reaffirming Penang’s standing as a destination where visitors can savour not only the King of Fruits, but also the unique flavours, culture and hospitality that define the state.
