Experienced hotelier, Ivan Khoo has been appointed as the new general manager of Capri by Fraser, Penang. Penang Hyperlocal had the opportunity to talk to him on his appointment:-
“I am a hospitality professional with over a decade of leadership experience across boutique and international hotel environments, currently serving as General Manager of Capri by Fraser, Penang. Throughout my career, I have focused on driving operational excellence, enhancing guest and resident satisfaction, and building strong, service-driven teams. My previous roles include Director of Residential Services at Marriott Residences Penang, Quality Manager at Courtyard by Marriott Penang, and Hotel Manager at The Edison George Town, where I had the privilege of leading the property to multiple international awards. With a background in engineering, entrepreneurship, and international conference production, I bring a well-rounded and strategic perspective, with a continued commitment to elevating service standards and delivering meaningful guest experiences,” he says.
Q – What is your vision for the new Capri by Fraser, Penang?
A – Our vision is to position Capri by Fraser, Penang as a vibrant, design-led lifestyle hotel that resonates with today’s modern travelers. We aim to create a seamless blend of comfort, community and local experiences – where guests feel both connected and inspired throughout their stay. At the same time, it’s not just about our guests. We also want the hotel to be a platform where talents in hospitality can grow, be nurtured, and build meaningful careers. If we can create a place where both guests and our team feel a strong sense of belonging, then we know we’re on the right track.
Q – What are the target markets for the new hotel?
A – We are looking at a mix of business and leisure travelers, especially those who appreciate flexibility and a more lifestyle-driven stay – young professionals, digital nomads, and extended-stay guests. Penang continues to attract a diverse crowd, so we also see strong opportunities with regional travelers within ASEAN, as well as returning international visitors.
Q – How do you plan to compete with the already established hotels in Penang?
A – Penang has a very strong and established hotel landscape, so for us, it’s less about competing head-on and more about offering something different. Capri by Fraser has its own personality – more relaxed, social, and lifestyle-focused. We want to create an experience that feels intuitive and relevant, where guests can work, relax, and connect comfortably. It’s really about finding our own space in the market.
Q – Where was your last posting in the hospitality industry?
A – I was previously with the Penang Marriott Complex, overseeing Residential operations.
Q – What is your management style?
A – I would describe my style as collaborative and approachable. I believe in working closely with the team, listening, and creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable to share ideas. At the end of the day, when the team feels supported and empowered, it naturally reflects in the way they take care of our guests.
Q – How do you unwind after a long day?
A – I keep it simple – a morning run with my better half, a good meal with family and friends, or just some quiet time to reset. It helps me stay balanced and clear-headed for the day ahead.
Q- What are your hobbies and interests?
A – I enjoy travelling and exploring different countries and cities, especially discovering dining spots and concepts. I also have an interest in wellness and try to stay active when I can. Being in hospitality, I naturally find myself observing trends and experiences wherever I go – it’s something I genuinely enjoy.
