Durian lovers take note, the durian season is back again in Penang !

In line with this, a launch ceremony was held at the Sia Boey Urban Archaeological Park here which saw the gathering of industry players.

Leading the event was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai along with State assemblyman for Komtar, YB Teh Lai Heng, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman, YB Wong Yuee Harng, Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI) general manager Datin Bharathi, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer, Ooi Chok Yan, Malaysian Association of Hotel Penang chapter chairman Dato Tony Goh among others.

Wong added that while some eagerly await the arrival of holidays, Penangites long for something else, which is the fragrant season of durians.

“Today, that anticipation is fulfilled as Penang once again welcomes the arrival of the durian season. Recognized globally as a food paradise, Penang now extends its most aromatic invitation to the world.

“We will also witness the grand launch of the Penang Durian Promotion and Penang Travel Deals -Durian Edition.

“From May, durians begin to appear on the trees in the hills of Penang, with early fruits ripening and farmers busily preparing for harvest.

“The peak season will arrive in June and July, bringing an abundance of top-quality durians rich in fragrance and irresistible to durian lovers.

“I sincerely hope that all durian lovers seize this opportunity and indulge in the King of Fruits while it is still plentiful and affordably priced. As the saying goes, “The early bird catches the worm,” or in this case, the best durians,” said Wong.

Wong also added that the allure of Penang durians has long transcended local fandom to become a global culinary phenomenon.

“From foodies in Singapore and Thailand to enthusiasts across Australia and Europe, they travel across oceans in pursuit of that rich and creamy Musang King, the bittersweet Black Thorn, or the delicate Hor Lor. The irresistible aroma of Penang durians truly knows no boundaries, with devotees spanning every time zone.

“Notably, in China, Malaysian fresh durians are considered a premium delicacy. For instance, Musang King commands a retail price of up to RMB 258 per kilogram (approximately RM149), far exceeding prices for Thai or Vietnamese durians.

“It’s the perfect moment to attract durian lovers from China and beyond to embark on a “Durian Hunt” to Penang.

“To enhance the experience for our durian-seeking visitors, we are proud to unveil the latest edition of the “Penang King of Fruits Durian Guide.” This guide is more than just a map — it is your key to unlocking Penang’s hidden gastronomic treasures. Rich in visuals and descriptions, the guide details the many durian varieties available across Penang, including appearance, flavor profile, and texture,” added Wong.

There are also special Durian-Themed Travel Packages, from all-you-can-eat orchard feasts and exclusive hotel privileges to transportation arrangements, every detail has been thoughtfully prepared for an unforgettable durian journey.

Guests were also treated to some of the best durians Penang has to offer following the launch ceremony.
