MRM Selangor – Veterans Main champions

The 24th edition of the Penang Sports Club (PSC) International Soccer 7’s Tournament saw keen competition over the weekend.

In all, some a record number of 70 teams participated with over 60% from overseas while the rest were from all over Malaysia. 

Among the foreign teams were from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Maldives and Brunei.

The Malaysian participation was from Kedah in the North to Johor in the South as well as Sabah from East Malaysia.

After fierce and friendly competition, LOGISTICS company MRM of Kuala Lumpur won the Veterans trophy when they managed to beat Jurong Weston Singapore  2–1 in an exciting final.

The match was keenly and evenly contested with ex-Malaysian National Amri Yahya scoring twice for MRM to secure the Veteran Trophy.

Then the Royal Selangor Club captured the Masters’ trophy with an emphatic 4-2 victory over Selangor All Stars. Striker Liew Kit Kong, an ex–Malaysian player scored a hat-trick for Royal Selangor Club

Penang Sports Club Trustees Dato Mohamad Junid Mohd Noor along with Dato Dr. S. Shankar and the organising chairman A Balasubramaniam were on hand to present the prize money, challenge trophies and medals to the winners and runners-up of all categories

Balasubramaniam, the organising chairman expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the teams, sponsors and the club for supporting the tournament.

“Everything went smoothly. We have got a record of 70 teams for this year’s tournament and they played hard.  There were many exciting matches. I am glad this tournament has turned out to be a big success,” said Bala.

In all, about 700 participants played in the 233 matches over two days which also promoted soccer and sports tourism for the state

Meanwhile, PSC also expressed its gratitude to its main sponsors, such as Penang State Sports Council/Sports Exco, Penang Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid and RGB International.

As in previous years, most of the participating teams paraded many ex-internationals and ex-state players in their line-up. For soccer enthusiasts, this was  a perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of yesteryear’s international stars from Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Maldives, Australia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China. 

The Malaysian internationals and state players who made an appearance in the tournament were Indra Putra Mahayayudin, Amri Yahyah, Liew Kit Kong, S. Chandru,   Chan Kok Heng, S.Veenod, S. Subramaniam, Latiff Suhaimi, Thirumurugan, Karim Pin, V. Murugan, A.Rukkumaran, Mohd Ramezey Che Ros, P. Maniam, D. Surendran  among others
