The Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau plans to bring a team of media members from Tamil Nadu to Penang so that they can promote the attractions of Penang to travellers and holiday makers from Tamil Nadu.

This is following the visit of 12 media organisations from Penang to Chennai from March 3 to March 5, 2025.

This initiative aligns with the recent launch of IndiGo Airlines’ direct flight connecting Penang and Chennai, a development poised to enhance tourism and cultural exchange between the two destinations.

“The primary objective of this media trip is to generate interest among Penangites in Chennai as a vibrant travel destination, ensuring sustained demand for this direct flight route. Through compelling media coverage, showcasing Chennai’s diverse attractions, rich cultural heritage, and unique travel experiences, this initiative aims to inspire travelers and promote cross-border tourism growth,” said Ashwin Gunasekeran, chief executive officer of PCEB at a press conference held at the Westin Chennai Velachery here.

Also present was Penang State Assemblyman for Pengkalan Kota was YB Wong Yuee Harng who is also the director of PCEB.

The media delegation’s journey included visits to Mahabalipuram, home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites that showcase ancient rock-cut temples and intricate sculptures reflecting India’s profound history. In addition, they are exploring Chennai’s bustling cityscape, where modernity and tradition blend seamlessly, as well as Kanchipuram, a city renowned for its magnificent temples.

“The Penang State Government fully supports this initiative as part of our commitment to sustaining direct connectivity with Chennai,’ said YB Wong Yuee Harng, Director of Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau. ‘This media trip is a crucial step in broadening travel opportunities while strengthening economic and cultural ties between our two destinations.’

Ashwin, underscored the significance of this initiative at a press conference held at the hotel.

“Through extensive media exposure, we aim to amplify awareness of Chennai’s rich tourism offerings, ensuring the success of this direct flight while fostering deeper collaborations in tourism and business. Strengthening these connections aligns with Penang’s broader vision of expanding its presence in key markets.’

“We are also getting enquiries from corporates, pharmaceutical and other companies to hold their functions and annual dinners in Penang. This is basically due to the competitive ticket pricing by IndiGo Airlines.

Ashwin also shared that the present Chennai-Penang route is experiencing an 85 per cent passenger load.

Meanwhile, Indian citizen, R. Surya, 25, and his wife S. Keerthana will be making their first trip to Penang by IndiGo Airlines for his honeymoon.

“We were actually considering Maldives but a brief visit to a promotion event by IndiGo for Penang changed our mind. We hope to spend around five days on the island and check out places of interest and food there,” he said.
