The St. Xavier’s Institution in George Town Penang has made history as the first school in Malaysia to receive an official tartan certification from the Tartan Registry of Scotland.
This prestigious recognition highlights the school’s commitment to celebrating cultural heritage and fostering a unique sense of identity among its students, faculty, and alumni.
The certified tartan, named the “St. Xavier’s Tartan,” is a bespoke design symbolizing the school’s legacy, values, and unity. Designed by Lim Kee Sitt and featuring a carefully curated combination of colours, the design reflects the institution’s dedication to academic excellence, diversity, and resilience.
While there are currently no physical weaves of the tartan, the official certification serves as a testament to the school’s innovative approach to connecting tradition with modernity.
The Tartan Registry of Scotland, the global authority on tartan designs, ensures that each registered tartan meets strict standards of originality and cultural significance.
The registration of the St. Xavier’s Tartan marks a proud moment for the school and for Malaysia, placing the nation on the global stage of cultural recognition.
To commemorate this achievement, the St. Xavier’s Tartan Certificate will be officially presented to the school’s Brother Director Brother Jason Blaikie, FSC by Tuan Megat Mizan Nicholas Denney during a ceremony at the SXI Heritage Centre in the school at 10am on the 23rd of January 2025.
The event will celebrate the symbolic importance of the tartan and its role in representing the school’s identity.
As the first school in Malaysia to receive this honour, St. Xavier’s Institution paves the way for other educational institutions to embrace creative and meaningful ways of celebrating their rich heritage.
