The traditional Japanese Yosakoi parade is back in Penang next month.
This time around it will be celebrated along Karpal Singh Drive here on Saturday, September 14, 2024.
A press conference to announce the parade was held in Komtar recently attended by State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai and the organising committee which is headed by Ms. Emi Yamazaki.
The parade is supported by the Penang State Exco Office for Tourism & Creative Economy.
“The Penang Yosakoi Parade is more than just a cultural showcase; it’s a celebration of Penang as a dynamic, international and multicultural city. “Penang as an International and Multicultural City. For everyone’s information Penang is home for many Japanese Expatriates and MM2H holders, not just that we are also home to more than 100 Japanese companies that have chosen Penang as the place to work and live.
“So, because of this Penang has long been recognized as a melting pot where diverse cultures coexist and blend harmoniously. Our heritage is rich with influences from across the globe, making Penang an international city that attracts people from all walks of life.
“This unique fusion of cultures is what gives Penang its distinct character, where the old and new, the East and West, come together to create something truly special”, said Wong in his address.
He also added that Yosakoi is a perfect embodiment of this cultural blend. Unlike the traditional Bon Odori, Yosakoi is a modern street dance event that invites a contemporary interpretation of Japanese culture, allowing it to merge seamlessly with our local Malaysian heritage.
“It is this ability to adapt and integrate different cultures that makes Penang not just a city of diversity, but a city of unity through diversity. This cultural fusion, much like how our ancestors created the world-renowned Straits/Nonyacuisine by blending various local cultures.
“Today, Penangnites continue this tradition by embracing modern Japanese culture through anime, cosplay, and now, Yosakoi. This event is particularly beloved by our youth, who find in Yosakoi a creative outlet for their passion for choreography, costume design, and energetic dance. It’s a cultural
experience that resonates not just here in Penang but across Malaysia, drawing young people together to celebrate creativity and diversity”, added Wong.
It should also be noted that the Penang Yosakoi Parade is the biggest Yosakoi event in Southeast Asia—if not the biggest outside of Japan.
