In his welcoming address, Wong welcomed the delegates from all over the world to Penang.

“It is a great honor to welcome all of you to the 26th Annual Meeting of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO-26). This marks the first time that this prestigious event is being held in Southeast Asia, bringing together over 100 leading ocean scientists and experts from more than 30 countries.

“Hosting this gathering in Penang is a proud moment for Malaysia and reflects the growing recognition of our region’s role in global ocean research and conservation.

“Since the oceans cover more than 70% of our planet and play a crucial role in regulating climate, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining livelihoods. However, they are facing increasing threats from climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. These challenges not only impact marine ecosystems but also affect the lives and economies of coastal communities worldwide”, he said.

The experts will explore the role of blue carbon ecosystems in climate mitigation and assess the impacts of El Niño and La Niña on coastal and marine environments.

“As a coastal state, Penang has always been closely connected to the ocean. Our marine ecosystems support fisheries, tourism, and local communities, but they are also under growing pressure from climate change, pollution, and habitat degradation.

“I recognize that ocean conservation is not just an environmental issue – it is also an economic priority. A thriving and healthy ocean is essential for sustainable tourism, which plays a key role in Penang’s economy.

“The Penang State Art Gallery will host the Aqua Marine Exhibition from September10 to November 10, 2025, showcasing the beauty of our marine environment through art and raising awareness of the need for conservation. This initiative reflects our ongoing efforts to promote ocean literacy and public engagement in marine sustainability”, added Wong.

.Delegates will spend the next few days discussing matters and explore new ideas and theories.
