Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow officiated the soft-opening ceremony of the newest luxury hotel in Georgetown – The George.
It offers a total of 92 rooms and suites with 10 different room categories. Other facilities include colonial inspired restaurant, The George Bar, the steam bath, gym, and saltwater swimming pool with exquisite landscaping.
Other dignitaries present were the Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Yeoh Soon Hin, Penang Legislative Assembly Speaker, Dato Law Choo Kiang, Penang director for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Jonathan Freddy Bagang, Malaysian Association of Hotels (National) vice president Dato Khoo Boo Lim, MAH Penang Chapter chairman Tony Goh, the managing director of The George, Catherine Teoh among others.
“I am happy to see the completion of this hotel after delays but I am confident that it will bring vibrancy to the heart of the city. Congratulations on your opening,” said Chow in his address.
He also joined a ribbon cutting ceremony and signed a plaque to mark the opening.
According to records, the site where the latest hotel in Georgetown sits was the former Australia Hotel, then a Teik Bin Chinese Dispensary, and later, it was the Osakaya Japanese Sundry Shop.
