Marketing student, Christine Yong, 22, was judged the winner of the Miss Yosakoi 2022 pageant held at the Gurney Plaza shopping mall yesterday.
She beat seven other contestants to the prestigious title.
“I am truly surprised to become Miss Yosakoi 2022 Penang. I did not expect this announcement.
“I hope to follow the footsteps of Nathalie Hong (out-going title holder) to carry out the duties of the ambassador of this pageant. I also hope to help promote the Japanese culture here,” said Vong after the prize presentation ceremony.
On hand to present the prizes was the Consul-General of Japan in Penang Mr Orikasa Hiroyuki, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer, Ooi Chok Yan and Gurney Plaza general manager, Peter Chan.
First runner-up was Dhivyaa Murthi, 16, who also won the Miss Photogenic award. The elated girl who was very excited, also thanked her parents and friends for providing moral support.
Charlene Teoh won the Miss Kimono award followed by Yeoh Ji Qing who won the Miss Popularity award. Judging was done by online votes and a panel of three judges.
Organising chairperson, Emi Yamazaki who is the President & Founder of the Pink Hibiscus Club thanked sponsors and well-wishers for their continuous support.
The highlight of the pageant will be on September 17 where a parade will be held at Persiaran Karpal Singh Drive from 3.30pm with the Yosakoi dance performance, Mid-Autumn Lantern Workshop, Sakura Ondo performance, Boria, Peranakan dances. There will also be numerous stalls to offer various activities.
