The Province Wellesley Gold and Silver Trade Fair 2023 (PWGS) will be held at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre from June 9 to 11, 2023.
Some 100 exhibitors and 10,000 visitors from across the country are expected to attend the fair.
On hand to announce the inaugural event was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin and Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer, Ashwin Gunasekeran.
Also present was the Federation of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Association of Malaysia chairman Dato Chiah Hock Yew and Law Chin Hui, president of PWGS Association.
“Penang’s gold and jewellery industry has a rich history spanning over 100 years, and it has always been a significant contributor to Malaysia’s gold and jewellery industry.
“Trade events such as PWGS 2023 are a great way to boost tourism in our state. They showcase not only our local gold and jewellery industry but also our unique culture, traditions, and craftsmanship to the world.
“Tourism has always been an important economic driver for our state, providing jobs and income for our people. I am confident that PWGS 2023 will help to attract more visitors to Penang, who in turn spend money on hotels, restaurants, and local businesses,” said Yeoh in his address.
He also added that the State Government will continue to support and stage more international meetings, incentive travel, and conventions and exhibitions encompassing the areas of advertising, innovation and technology, medicine, etc.
“All of these will create business opportunities to exhibitors and visitors alike, and consolidate Penang’s position as a premier events capital. Tourism is not just about economics; it’s also about cultural exchange and understanding.
“PWGS 2023 will provide a platform for international promotion and publicity of local designers, who have long been overdue for recognition. The designs are a reflection of our diverse heritage, with influences from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European cultures,” added Yeoh.
Meanwhile, Law said that 80% of the jewellery exported from the country is from Penang state. They are sent to Europe, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Australia and the Asia region.
“We want to promote our members on the world stage and open the market to the whole world. During the fair there will be competitions for the best designs, best craftsmen and also seminars,” he said.
