Shangri-La Rasa Sayang and Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang hosted a vibrant and educational Dragon Boat Model Challenge, welcoming 53 students from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Pai Chai, Batu Feringghi for a morning of creativity, learning, and hands-on sustainability.
Designed for Standard 4, 5 and 6 students aged 10 to 12 years, the activities encouraged students to craft their own dragon boat models using recycled and upcycled materials, blending environmental awareness with cultural appreciation.
A highlight of the morning was the Dragon Boat Showcase Session, where the top 10 selected students presented their handcrafted models. Each participant shared their design concepts, the materials used, and their sources of inspiration, showcasing remarkable creativity and innovative thinking.
Following the showcase, the competition moved to the final floating test and judging session, at the children’s pool. Entries were evaluated based on floatability, stability, and overall performance, alongside creativity, originality, innovative use of recycled materials, and presentation clarity.
Judges deliberated to select the top designs. In recognition of the students’ efforts and achievements, the event concludes with a prize presentation and certificate ceremony. The top ten winners are honoured, with the top three receiving premium hampers and all ten awarded Adventure Zone entry tickets.
All participants also receive certificates of appreciation. To add to the celebration, guests were treated to a specially crafted 3D Dragon Boat Cake, prepared by the resort’s in-house culinary team, showcasing the hotel’s signature expertise.
The programme ended with a lunch session, an opportunity for students, teachers and organisers to connect and reflect on the day’s meaningful experiences.
