Four Russian Federation’s Navy ships are on their goodwill visit to Penang and commemorate the fallen heroes 110 years ago during World War 1 here.

They are berthed at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT).

The ships are part of the Russian Federation navy’s Pacific fleet based in Vladivostok. They consisted of three frigates and one supply ship.

Their visit here is also to honour the loss of 89 Russian soldiers in the battle of Penang during the First World War in 1914.

The four ships are under the command of Captain 1st Rank Mr Alexei Antsiferov and his officers. In line with their visit, they held a reception on board one of the ships to share goodwill and  camaraderie.

Representing the Federal government was the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mat Sabu while Deputy Chief Minister II YB Jagdeep Singh Deo represented the state government.

Also present was the ambassador of the Russian Federation to Malaysia, HE Naiyl M. Latypov.

Others present were the Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Penang, Dato Teoh Seng Lee, Brigadier General Dato Mohammad Razief Che Ahmad, Royal Malaysian Navy’s Kapt Yusman Darmawan and other guests.

In his welcoming note, Captain Alexei Antsiferov thanked the people of Penang for treating the wounded sailors during the war which helped save many lives.

“This visit is not only a protocol but a visit of friendship and establishing closer ties between both nations”, said Alexei.

Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said he was proud to be here upon the invitation of the Embassy of Russia.

“Our Prime Minister visited Russia and met President Putin last month to improve our relations.

“In our concept of neutrality, we have good relations with all countries like China, Russia, Iran and Middle East countries. We hope to continue the good relations between both countries”, he said.

Meanwhile, ambassador Latypov welcomed guests and thanked them for joining the reception to welcome the detachment of the Russian Navy to Penang.

“Our sailors were here 110 years ago to defend the nation during war times. I also like to underline that Malaysia is a steadfast partner in the region and we are ready to further improve this relationship in other areas. During the meeting between President Putin and Prime Minister, several promising agreements had been reached.

“We are also prepared to send high class halal products and cooperate in the areas of education and other fields. Even the first Malaysian cosmonaut was sent to outer space on a Russian space rocket.

“The very fact the Russian Navy in the port of Penang shows we are ready to cooperate in terms of Navy, Air force and army”, said Latypov.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep thanked the Russian Navy for choosing Penang for their visit, bringing four naval vessels to Penang. On behalf of the state government, I have been invited to Russia but before that we want to invite more Russians to come to Penang. Our investment from foreign investors is also growing. Today there are 110 sailors and officers from the Russian Navy here, we thank them and welcome them to Penang”, he said.

Formalities aside, three crew members of the ships rendered patriotic Russian songs to entertain guests. They were also treated to a fine Russian buffet meal prepared by the crew members.

For the uninitiated, the Russian cruiser, Zhemchug (meaning Pearl), had sunk off the coast of Penang during World War I.
